| In this lecture we will look at the history and development of English from about 400 C.E. to 2008. Beginning with pre-Old English, the major linguistic features and the socio-cultural background of each individual period will be described and discussed. Some sessions will also be devoted to the history of American English. Moreover, we will also study more theoretical aspects of language history and language change, such as the principles of linguistic periodization, and some of the major mechanisms of linguistic change.
