André Gerlach: Obama's approach to the American Dream - a conventional rags-to-riches interpretation? (14. Februar 2009)
The American Dream is arguably one of the core aspects of American culture. This presentation will first of all attempt to shed some light on the specific historical implications of the American Dream. The focal aspect of the presentation, however, will be the way in which Obama addresses the American Dream concept in one of his speeches he delivered in late 2007. Does Obama's understanding of the American Dream merely cater to the need for social and economic advancement or does it transcend the boundaries of such a conventional interpretation?
Verena Arkenau, Carina Balster, Michelle Kleine: Kennedy – Clinton – Obama - Specific aspects in their inauguration speeches (14. Februar 2009)
Three different presidential inaugural addresses – what do they have in common and where are the differences? The presentation will be based on the comparison of these speeches with regard to content, structure and language. Of course, this cannot be done without a closer look at the most striking keywords and metaphors and at the particular historical and political background.
Karsten Klövekorn, Jens Bonk, Paula Lichte: Campaigning 2.0 - Social media and the 2008 presidential election (14. Februar 2009)
A lot of people, from the New York Times to "Joe the Plumber", stress that the Internet, specifically the so-called Web 2.0, really became a viable and integral part of campaigning in the 2008 election and the primaries. Some even say that Barack Obama won because of his

effective use of new technology. In our presentation, we will explain what the enigmatic Web 2.0 is and why it is different from traditional media (both on- and offline). As a starting point for the discussion of the Internet's influence on the 2008 election, we will also show examples from Web 2.0 services used by both the Republican and the Democratic campaign, as well as their supporters. Furthermore, we will have a short look at the use of the Web 2.0 in other campaigns and present a brief comparison of past attempts to harness the power of the web with what Barack Obama and his campaign did. Markus Hanneken: “The black Kennedy” – Barack Obama`s campaign and the iconic figure John F. Kennedy (14. Februar 2009)
Scarcely a campaign, election and inauguration of a president has been accompanied by such a massive amount of media coverage and enthusiastic admiration by people all over the world like Barack Obama`s. Still, the media hype, euphoria and great expectations connected with the election of Obama are reminiscent of an iconic figure in American history – John F. Kennedy.

Early in the race for presidency, experts and observers promoted the idea of Barack Obama as “black Kennedy”, able to awake affection and new hope for a country beset by serious worries. By analyzing the campaigns, speech parts, media coverage, characteristics and backgrounds of Obama and Kennedy I have tried to work out to what extent a comparison between Obama and Kennedy is valid. Furthermore, this study will focus on how Obama and his team used the image of the “icon” Kennedy for their own purposes.
